It feels like winter is already here, but you know cold weather doesn’t keep us farmers from staying busy! Keep reading to see what we’re up to in December!
Christmas ON THE FARM
taking the alpacas to the streets!
Every December, the City of West Chicago hosts their Frosty Fest tree lighting ceremony where they have a variety of festivities including food trucks, live ice sculpting, horse and buggy rides, live reindeer, and the most festive of all- CHRISTMAS ALPACAS! We can’t think of a better way to make merry than feeding and petting our alpacas! We brought 4 of our girls and they had a great time eating out of everyone’s hands for 3 hours, especially Zoey.
Winterizing our chicken coop
When we were choosing which chicken breeds to get, we specifically chose some of the more cold tolerant breeds, but we still winterize the chicken run to make it more enjoyable for the ladies to go outside throughout the winter. We use the same polythene plastic that’s on our hoophouse to act as a wind and snow block on two sides, and it really helps! In the recent cold snaps, the ladies barely came outside except for a quick snack, but now that we put up the poly, they are back out and about!
Since there aren’t bugs or vegetation to rip up in the winter, we do our best to keep them busy with microgreens compost, special chicken treats, and naturally, disco lights (their coop turns into the very exclusive nightclub, Disco Chicks). This year now that they are trained enough to come back inside when we call them, we will also let them play in the snow in our garden. We are looking forward to seeing what they think of snow!
travel update
We are traveling for the holidays and HHF will be closed December 20 – January 6. We can’t wait to get back to growing for you in the new year!
